The Iconic American Drive In Restaurant - Iowa Edition - The Dairy Dandy

There are few things more iconic than the various drive in restaurants that populate a lucky few towns and cities in this country. We all recognize popular fast food chains, but these small mom and pop operations are generally not household names to most folks except in the areas they are located. In many cases, they are a best kept secret of the locals. Let’s check out another “best kept secret” around Iowa!

Dairy Dandy - Sheldon, Iowa

When I was growing up, we shopped in Sheldon quite a bit. When my mom wanted to give us a special treat, she occasionally took us to Dairy Dandy for an ice cream cone. Well, many years later, the Dairy Dandy is still known for its ice cream treats (including 24 flavors of soft serve ice cream and a wide variety of mix in ingredients) but also for other items like broasted chicken and broad array of different types of sandwiches. They even have a limited breakfast menu. It still occupies the same space off Highway 60. Please note that there is not much indoor seating so be prepared to eat in your car or find a picnic area or park nearby. There are a couple of picnic tables just outside as well.

While the menu may have evolved over the years, the locals know it as a place to get delicious, reasonably-priced meals. Whenever I go there as an adult, I get to revisit a piece of my childhood. How fun is that? 👏 By the way, the butter pecan soft-serve is great! 😉
